Interesting point of view John. To me state of the art does not necessarily
mean modern and extremely expensive. A state of the art product is a product
where the engineers has put their heart and skills into making at well
performing product. 
High end on the other hand, means a product with up to date technology where
nothing is saved. 

But English is not my native language, so I may be totally wrong.

To me, "state of the art" means having the most modern technology.  And I  
can't think of any camera that can be considered more up-to-date than the  
K10D (at the moment).

"High-end" is different.  A Rolls Royce is "high-end" because of its  
no-expense-spared design and construction.  But it may not be  
state-of-the-art.

So (IMHO) "state-of-the-art" is temporary, "high-end" is timeless.
