GMail is just fine as long as you don't mind Google reading your mail.

It's great for mailing lists and such, where the mail is going into a 
public archive anyways.

If gmail is web based for reading email -- I don't like that. Too slow on 
machine with dialup. At least AOL's (limited) email reader is text file based 
reading, so it very quick.

If it isn't web based, then I might look into gmail. But then who would Doug 
(others) have to bug about a full mailbox?
