Selling new lenses helps new lens sales. Reselling old lenses helps 
people who sell old lenses.
Interstingly, Pentax sales were pretty moribund for quite a while, until

they started selling DSLR cameras.
Now they can't seem to make enough of them to supply the demand for 
them.
The facts seem to fly in the face of your fiction.
