I don't follow you. Is the capture (sensor & ADC) done at 22 bits or 12 bits? jco

Well you are free to hold that position but to me the output from the CCD has just been sampled and massaged to fit the 12 bit RAW profile optimally. We don't know the data depth in processing, we only know that the CCD is sampled with 22 bit data precision.
