The number of people for whom it is really important is statistically
very small. Most buyers of new cameras nowadays want lenses that take
advantage of all that the camera offers, they don't want some hobbled
down old lenses that don't take advantage of all that the camera can do.
DSLR camera are light years ahead of K/M lenses in terms of
functionability.
If they put a mostly unwanted feature into a camera, then everyone pays
for that feature, whether or not they want it. If the feature is mostly
unwanted , then if it is not there, it will be mostly unmissed.

Of those people who miss it, some will shrug it off as of little
consequence and get on with life, and a very few will lose their minds
over it and not buy the product.
So, Pentax can put the product into the stores with a smaller price tag
which makes it more affordable, and cosequently, more desirable, which
will translate into more sales, and they have saved their entire
customer base money, which may allow them to buy an additional lens that
can take advantage of the camera's capabilities.
The number of sales they will lose is very small when compared to the
number of sales they might gain on this one feature, especially when the
old lenses in question are still perfectly usable if the customer
chooses to hobble themselves with those lenses.

I wonder how many more DSLR sales Canon would have made if they had
enabled backwards compatability of FD lenses into the EOS mount?

Evidently, Caon isn't terribly concrned about that group of customers,
and there were a hell of a lot more of them than there were Pentax K/M
customers (of which JCO is not one).
