The best protection for cyclists is to learn how to cycle properly in traffic. This means behaving like the driver of a vehicle, obeying the traffic laws, changing lanes properly, positioning yourself on the road properly, stopping at red lights, cycling the right way up one way streets, making proper hand signals, using lights, making sure other drivers know what you're doing, anticipating trouble and being just paranoid enough.
