I started taking pictures and studying photography when I was 8 years  
old, Markus. That means I worked with film cameras. Or "used" film  
cameras if the word "worked" offends you. They are synonymous in  
English, in this context.

There is an error in the statement, however: it should be 1964, not  
1962. ;-)
