A military pilot friend of mine suggests that the plane was en route to
some other place and that the pilot, by then probably one of the
hijackers, was trying to fly as low as possible to avoid being detected
by radar when the plan deviated from its expected flight plan. He says
that is what he would have tried. They could have gotten a little too
close to the ground, since the hijacker-pilot probably had little or no
experience with that particular aircraft.
A hypothesis, of course, since we will probably never really know.
Could have been headed for Washington, DC, for example, or perhaps even
Chicago where there is a
building taller than the World Trade Center.
