Sometimes (and with increasing frequency), I wonder why I bother
reading the Pentax forum at DPReview. Here's a gem from today,
addressed to Ned Bunnel, Marketing VP for Pentax USA (Edited for
brevity):

-----------
"I shoot in the ISO range of 100 to 400, and I have found the color
and tonal palette in particular to be superb and, in many ways, more
pleasing to my eyes than any other DSLR I've used before.

However, because there has been some controversy over "banding" at ISO
1600 with the K10D, I thought I would run my own experiment.

I invite you or someone else at Pentax to set a K10D to ISO 1600, set
the exposure compensation to -2 EV, and take pictures of a relatively
even toned grey subject. If my experience and those of some others is
typical, you will see fairly distinct vertical (assuming the camera is
held in landscape mode) pattern noise. There is only the very
slightest hint of the phenomena at ISO 800, and none at lower ISO
ratings."
----------

Shocking. Who would think that a camera would produce ugly noise when
underexposed 2 stops at ISO 1600? Even more shocking that this user
would care, given his first statement that he uses the camera in the
range of 100-400.
