The towers are supposed to have been designed to withstand a pretty
sizable airplane running into them -- designers were aware of that
potential problem because a plane once did run into the Empire State
Building. (Back in the 1940s).

Either the designers miscalculated and did not allow for the impact of a
plane as large and heavy as the ones used, or the explosion and fire
from full fuel loads may have caused it. Indeed, I suppose some of the
structural steel could have partially melted from heat.

This is one of the questions that I suspect will be addressed by
investigators later, though.
