Who relies on knowledgable salespeople nowadays and how often can one find 
them?  They will certainly steer them to the highest priced item the 
customer says they can afford (or the one with the highest margin). That 
will usually be, again the models with the higher pixel count.

I know many people have more than one *ist D/X to meet their requirements, 
but how many people here would have bought yet another 6MP body if that was 
all Pentax was offering?

I know some have, but the answer is likely to be - not many who already have 
a 6MP body and can afford a 10Mp body.  The fact is megapixel count 
(especially larger differences in MP) is the singular easily quantifiable 
spec that is both easy to demonstrate and easy to see.
