I share your sentiment. I am one of those who do love finely crafted
precision instruments besides they are just tools.

There are so many film classics and gems but not DSLRs. Problem is that
manufacturers themselves know that the product life cycle of their DSLRs is
relatively short as digicam in general is still an evolving technology and
not as mature as film cameras.

So, I would think that it would be quite sometime before DSLRs makers start
investing in more solid bodies, beyond the level of say, K10D plastic bodies
and weather proofing etc. Any investment in other parts would simply jack
up the cost and lose competitiveness. P&S digicam is somewhat maturing and
there are some durable bodies with essential features which you can enjoy
for years to come.
For anyone who pays over $1,000 or (much) more for a DSLR, you hope it
should last more than a few years without becoming obsolete. D200 is a
solid body for example but even it will become obsolete in a few years.
Just like a computer, eh? :-). If you can write it off for a professional
(i.e., money generating) use, it is not the matter, but for most amateur
hobbyist, I believe DSLRs are still too expensive for what it is.
Nevertheless, I for one....... :-).
