The reports I've been reading of late indicated that Pentax was not the dominant player in the medical imaging market either and was getting a little beatup there as well.

For Hoya, the deal will give it access to new areas of potential growth, such as medical equipment, where Pentax has experience, helping it go head to head with Olympus in that market...
