The biggest contribution to the environment the US and Canada could make would be to shut down the coal-fired power plants. Too many of them are grandfathered from environmental regulations and are extremely dirty.
To give my local government credit, they're actually trying to get rid of coal plants (About the only useful thing the Ontario government has done), but Ontario is currently far too reliant on them. -Adam P.
