I just flew San Jose -> Chicago -> Nashville on United. Clothes and
other such replaceable stuff go into checked luggage. My Timbuk2
Commute XL bag with laptop, K10D, three lenses, phone, batteries,
power supplies, plus travel papers and reading material all went on
board. No issues at all. (I've also done a tripod strapped to the
carry on bag or in its own bag but didn't this time through.)

In essence: count on one carry on (two if the air carrier is United
but call ahead) and all the important camera gear has to fit and be
with you. I never check camera gear of any kind.
