I don't know if anyone has tested Pentax's claims for SR, but in in my 
experience it does indeed give you a big boost in low-light capability. 
A few weeks ago I posted a link to an experimental K10D photo I took at 
night with no streetlights--full moon on snow. The settings were ISO 
1600, 1/8 second handheld with SR on, at F1.2 on the A50 F1.2. It worked.

But rather than thinking in terms of extra light-gathering by your lens 
(which is not actually what happens) it is better to think of the gain 
in shutter speed steps.
