Stop fretting. ]'-)

All of these firmware updates, on every camera I've owned to date,
install the same way:

... I use a card reader to manipulate the files on the card, I don't
the camera into the computer ...

- Format a storage card (I always format in the camera).
- Unpack the download.
- Copy the firmware binary file to the root directory of the storage.
- Make sure your camera has a fully charged set of batteries or
battery in it.
- With the camera off, insert the card and close the card door.
- Turn the camera on while holding down the Menu button (Pentax
specific).

The camera will auto-load the firmware binary and present information
on the screen instructing you how to proceed to do the install. Once
it's done ...

- shut off the camera
- remove the storage card
- delete the firmware binary from the card
- put the card back into the camera, turn it on, and format the card
again.

You're ready to start using the camera with the new firmware. If you
made various configuration settings, they are often erased and the
camera set to its defaults, so you'll have to re-set it the way you
want it.

I always wait to obtain the FW updates directly from Pentax' website.
