I doubt that was the motivation. Adobe certainly didn't have anything to fear from RSE or RSP given their market leader position in image processing software. I suspect that the Picasa folks were looking for a big-wallet buyer to adopt their technology, and that Adobe found aspects of the technology that were valuable to advancing their product line. Whatever the business behind it, Lightroom is surprising me with its capabilities and quality the more I use it. That last set I did, http://www.gdgphoto.com/windowpeople/ and the most recent PAW photo http://homepage.mac.com/ramarren/photo/PAW7/03.htm were both rendered to finish prints in Lightroom exclusively. They look fantastic in A3 size prints! I only used Photoshop and Bridge to run my standard PS actions, generating the web-sized JPEGs.
