I'll rephrase it to "pit bull lookalikes".  It's a combination of 
popularity, percieved placidity and parental control that produces the 
statistic.  I haven't seen one for a while but I believe it was _all_ 
reported (presumably to the Police) dog attacks.  In that circumstance, 
I suspect that the level of "family dog" incidents is underrepresented, 
as people are unlikely to report their own dog.
