        Sadly, they don't exist for non-MacOS or non-Winders OS's.  Mac 
hardware is too expensive, and Winders is such a toy under the hood it's 
fairly useless for any real multitasking work.

        If Photoshop were available for Linux, I'd be running that in a 
heartbeat.

        To answer the OP, I use the Gimp once in awhile when the 
8-bits/channel limitation isn't important.  If I need real color depth, I 
use a fork of the Gimp called Cinepaint.  That works, but it's based on an 
older version of the Gimp and is a bit flakey.
