If what you say is true, (and I have no reason to doubt you), I would 
think I saw a bad copy.  What I expected was printing of about the 
quality you'd find in National Geographic, what I saw show gross 
printing screen errors. (blacks had a grayish cross hatch appearance), 
which was visible even when the page was held at arms length.
