No K mount (or other bayonet mount, with adapter) body can operate the M42 automatic diaphragm mechanism. Using the Pentax DSLRs with M42 lenses and adapter: - In Av mode, you stop down the lens manually, then the metering system does its job automatically to set exposure time when you release the shutter. - In Manual mode, you stop down the lens manually and then press the green button to set exposure time. Release the shutter at your discretion. The K10D gives you the option of making a digital preview with which you can check exposure, with either a histogram or a blinkie display for saturation and underexposure areas.
