Actually, since the Canon's do continuous metering in Manual and 
Aperture Priority along with TTL flash (including wireless multi-group 
flash) they're more functional than Pentax DSLR's with M42 lenses (which 
offer metering only via the green button hack or DoF preview and no TTL 
flash with non-A lenses).

In fact they're also more functional than any M42 slr, courtesy of 
offering TTL flash and fast motor drives, things that never existed on 
M42 SLR's (winders yes, 5+fps, no).
