Great composition - 5-10 minutes well spent!

The conversion does seem to lack a bit of tonal range but I'm not sure how PS 
Elements carries out the conversion and what options it provides.

There's an excellent article on B&W conversions here that you might like to 
look at.

I quite like the "Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer" method.  It's very easy and 
allows you to quickly scan a wide range of conversion options.
