Before I got my 540FGZ, I used a 280T for a couple years on my *istD. It performs very well in auto (non-TTL) mode. It has two auto modes, for close or far subjects, and switching between those modes is all you have to do to use the flash on a digital SLR. The flash's built-in thyristor will do the rest.
