Ann, I've been playing with different watermarks lately too. I'm a subscriber of PhotoShelter which sounds much like SmugMug. At least in allowing you to specify a watermark and them automatically putting on when you upload photos.
Just this past week, I decided to go with a scanned copy of my signature as my watermark/copyright notice. Check out my galleries at http://www.phojonick.com to see some examples.
