Thanks Tom.

I think the shot of the steps could be very pretty if taken on a wet
day in spring, with the fresh leaves and blossom on the plants and
bushes either side.

Not that I'm into pretty pictures at all, but I suspect a shot like
that could sell well and would be in keeping with the long-established
artistic and photographic traditions of the area. Frank Meadow
Sutcliffe photographed a lot around there, and there is a school of
English Impressionist painters called the Staithes Group. Much of
their work looks chocolate-box sentimental nowadays; however, they
were quite avant-garde in their day - many of them worked and studied
with the top-rank French Impressionists - and a very large part of
their work was honest and unsentimental about the lives of the fishing
& farming people of the area. Dame Laura Knight (born Laura Johnson)
and Harold Knight are probably the best known. I like a lot of the
paintings of Frederick William Jackson, Robert Jobling and Henry
Silkstone Hopwood.

Many of the views these people painted are essentially unchanged, and
now much photographed. I've seen a lot of paintings where I must have
stood on the same spot as the painter - without me being aware of the
painting before. For example, I took this photo:

before I was aware of this painting (middle one in the top row):

but compositionally they are identical.
