The significant question is "affordable compared to what?". :-) If you want to run at the front of Spec Miata, in SCCA or NASA, you're going to be spending, literally, at least $20,000 per season. And that's a low-buck effort. Some of those guys spend $25,000 on a new engine more than once a year.
