The significant question is "affordable compared to what?". :-)  If you
want to run at the front of Spec Miata, in SCCA or NASA, you're going to
be spending, literally, at least $20,000 per season.  And that's a
low-buck effort.  Some of those guys spend $25,000 on a new engine more
than once a year.  If you want to run at the back of the field and just
have fun, like we do, then you can do it for a couple of grand a year
per car.

In a spec class like Spec Miata, where there are big globs of evenly
matched cars, you're /going/ to do body work regularly.  It's just the
nature of the beast.  I've probably seen more seriously bent Spec Miatae
than any other single class.

What amateur series were you planning to run that had enough payouts to
cover all expenses for a season?!
