Godfrey, the Manfrotto that I mentioned is sold without any additions (no head, no quick release) for $85 here.
I may have to buy a quick release and a head, but probably later. Alternatively I could try to dismount the head and quick release from the Slik tripod that I have and attach it to the monopod, though it then will be ugly and bulky ;-).
