One thing to remember is that every time there is a new release, you
get coverage in all the marketing literature. Canon got a lot of
mileage out of those Rebels.

Canon apparently had the clout in the market to operate in that way, whereas
Pentax likely did/does not.
In that last interview, apparently Pentax now admits the folly and IMO,
wasted time and effort and bad perception created by churning out minor
variations on the theme.
Paraphrased from the interview:
'shouldnt have made that kind of small trivial changes... We are not going
to do it any more without enough substance'
'The result was we followed those directions, i.e., making the new model
smaller and lighter only.'
In the DLSR world, the fact that competitors WERE producing new models with
changes that would be viewed in the marketplace as positive upgrades, while
Pentax was largely producing downgrades from the *ist D, with minor changes
to screen and buffer size, certainly did not help Pentax's image.
