Bob, my LightRoom crashed several times like a program would normally
crash - displaying this standard dialog and then just close. It never
made my whole PC hang. However I usually run LR alone - nothing else is
running at the same time. Also I have asked my brother (a professional
sys. admin) to take out all unnecessary parts of Windows, like redundant
services, etc. So when my computer boots up, it only takes order of 80
Mb of RAM. I suggest you try to do the same.

As for the internet - I am running from behind the router (very cheap
Netgear piece) so that I don't need a software firewall. Also, routinely
I don't have a resident anti virus program. I run it occasionally manually.

Also of course checking your hardware for possible malfunction due to
age or dust is a good idea. Also be sure to check the internal fans of
your PC.

Cheers.

Boris
