I think you're just plain hitting the limitations of printing technology. The newer Epson Ultrachrome inks are better in the reds and browns, but I've still seen some limitations there. You can try downloading the ICC profiles of the newer printers, and using a proofing view in Photoshop to see the results. My *istDS also seems to be a bit "off" in rendering high-saturation reds.
