Many years ago I did a creative writing course, which was very useful
for getting feedback from people who knew - it was run by a couple who
had published about 30 novels, radio plays and screenplays between
them, so they knew what they were talking about*. I would recommend
you find someone similar, who can give you good feedback on your
writing, and help you find your way to getting it published.

It may not be as small a market as you think. If you can write well it
almost doesn't matter what your subject matter is. There are endless
streams of books published here about the misfortunes, mishaps and
poignant moments involved in being a vet/doctor/gardener/rat
killer/dustbin man/publican/policeman/whatever, and some of them have
made their authors very wealthy.

*I'm a good writer, but a dilettante!
