I wrote a novel, and I'm currently negotiating for representation
with agents. My novel is based on career experiences, but it's
fiction. Fiction requires that you find an agent to represent you
with publishers. Publishers won't deal directly with fiction writers.
Finding an agent is very difficult. Less than one percent of the
novels submitted are accepted for representation. Only a quarter of
those are ever published. Publishing non-fiction is a bit easier
because you can deal directly with some publishers. However, the
market is very small. Again, only a tiny percentage of what is
written ever sees the press. That being said, writing is a rewarding
and interesting hobby. I write to put bread on the table, but my
attempt at the novel is purely a whim. There are numerous writing
workshops on the internet. One very good one that I have participated
in from time to time is the writing workshop of Pennsylvania State
University. You can find that and others through google.
