At both ends of the spectrum, ultra wide and extreme telephoto, you
need to pay particular attention to a sturdy support to obtain the
best possible results. Since I was focusing on the DA14, I was not
making reference to longer focal length lenses, that all.

Long lenses need a sturdy tripod to achieve best results due to the
issues involved with camera motion and magnification. Given a stable
platform, long lens resolution is ultimately limited by the effects
of DoF and atmospheric haze. Once at the limit of the atmosphere and
focus depth, how well you focus and how much DoF you can get are the
primary constraints on detail resolution, not the resolution
capabilities of the recording medium.

Ultra wide lenses need a sturdy tripod to achieve their best
resolution for similar reasons, but since you usually look for very
finely detailed images over a much wider span of DoF with an
ultrawide, ultimate resolution of the lens and recording medium
usually make a larger influence on the image quality than DoF and
atmospheric haze.

In truth, you need a sturdy tripod to get the best out of any lens,
but the kinds of scenes more normally associated with fast wide to
portrait tele lenses are not generally as prone to be the highly
detailed scenes that ultra wide lenses are used for with the same
frequency. Of course, there are lots of occasions where hand-held is
the only way to get the picture ... but I never delude myself that
*any* hand-held exposure will reach the ultimate resolution
capabilities of a lens/camera.
