Been there, done that. The cheapest one I've done was a straight from my camera to the printer file of a historic building in Moose Jaw. No computers, no external software, just well composed and properly exposed jpeg. The picture is hanging on the wall of the business that owns the property the building is on, and has garnered many compliments from the people who have seen it.
For me, photography is about things I can hold in my hand, put in a frame, pass around to other people. Photography is not about web galleries or pictures posted to the internet. Having said that, I do post images from time to time for people to view. In order to do that, I try to optimize the image to the purpose for which I am intending. If I intend to make a picture for hanging on the wall, I give the file a different optimization than I would if I was posting it to the web. One of the changes I make is to size it down enough that it will fit a moderately sized computer screen so that it can be viewed comfortably by my peers. I realize that my peergroup may not all have 22 inch monitors running at 2000x1600 pixels. I know that this sort of monitor isn't required for doing quality image editing. This is one of those areas where the equipment really doesn't impact the end result. My honest opinion is that one would be clueless to think otherwise.
