Generally the dust only settles in the cavity where t4eh aperture
resides so it's not a particularly complex procedure but it's labor
intensive. So unless the dust cover is particularly dense and the lens
is well used or valuable then it's probably not worth the effort. If
it's bad enough it can reduce the contrast as can vapor deposits from
old lubricants or plasticizers but it's pretty rare to come across a
lens that bad.
