Well, that would have been before my parents birth  (early 1900's), but not 
their's parents. And, I bet it still went on for a bit  after the ban. There 
was a lot of anti-Chinese feeling in California once upon a  time. Immigrant 
influxes to help build railroad lines. Racism, yes. And  suspicion of 
non-English 
speakers (or those who didn't speak it  much).

Odd now how California is about as culturally/racially mixed as  anywhere in 
the US. Probably the most.
