A tripod head I've come to rely on for most of my static images (some say all my images are static!) - the Bogen 3275 compact geared head http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/109828-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_3275_3275_Mini_Geared_Head.html About as good as it gets for precise camera movement in up/down, left/right & rotational movements.
