A "portable storage device" is not just an external hard drive. It is typically something self-powered with input ports for flash memory cards, software to transfer the contents of the memory cards to the drive, and other ports which connect to a host computer for transferring the files there as well. They can include displays indicating file operations, number of files contained, capacity, and/ or display the images.
I'm not familiar with the Hyperdrive PSD specifically. I use the Epson P2000, also with 40Gbytes of storage, because it has a large, clear display for reviewing the photos. I've been very satisfied with its performance and utility. I think the Hyperdrives are re-branded CompactDrive units. The CompactDrive PD70X had a good reputation overall.
