It sounds like one of them is not fully compliant with the TIFF 6
standard. If you go to http://www.adobe.com and search for "TIFF" and
"Standard" you should find it. There used to also be a program there
that would dump the tags in a TIFF file so you could see where the
disagreement was occurring.

The Nikon software could be creating technically illegal TIFF files, or
PhotoPaint might not be up to date with the TIFF 6 standard (but it
should be, the standard's been stable for more than the three years
you've had the software) while the Nikon software is.

BMP goes to 24 bits, at least. Conversions Plus did something else
with it, like maybe RLE compressing it.

I don't think it's the black scan border that's the problem. I think
that Hijaak and PhotoPaint are just in better synch w.r.t. the TIFF
standard. Hijaak is definitely more lenient than many graphics
programs about what sort of malformations or misrepresentations it will
accept in an image file. It's probably also closer to the standard
than most scanning software, I'd guess.

This probably means that PhotoPaint didn't think it was a 24-bit-color
image. Many of the "Effects" can only be (reasonably) performed on a
24-bit-color image.

Just use Hijaak to read, then save, the files after they're scanned and
you're probably good to go.
