8 bits is per color channel, so that is a 24 bits bmp. Anything more then 8 bits per cnahal will be treated as 16 bits per color, so that means 48 bits in total. This happens with other programs as well as you open a file with 48 bit (16 per color channel). After converting it to 8 bit per channel you have all the options available.
