Alan - The old RawShooter essentials will do batch conversions from PEF to JPG as well as several other file formats, and will recognize the *istD, DS, DL and DS2. I have heard it will recognize PEFs from the K-series if you go into the program file and replace one of the Pentax camera tags will the K-series tag. I've not tried it, so I don't know if it really works or not.
The footprint on your HDD will be about 55 meg, though, so I don't know if that's too large for what you had in mind. I still have copies of all the iterations, so if you want to try it let me know and we'll work out some way to get it to you. -p P. J.
