The 'A' setting on A-series and newer lenses allows the body to control 
the aperture.  Your Super Program has four exposure modes - manual, 
aperture priority, shutter priority and program.  You won't be able to 
use shutter priority or program without the 'A' setting.

FWIW, the M50/1.7 is really sharp.
