From the original set, I would take the 77mm, no hesitation. I had
all three (31, 43, 77), the 31 was on my first *ist-D and was stolen
along with the camera. Never replaced it. It is a fine lens but too
bulky to carry for the limited (pun intended) use I would make of
that focal length. The 43 is nice but has never seemed that special
to me.

With the new lenses, the 21mm would give the 77mm a close run, but
the 77mm would still be preferred.

If I were starting from scratch, first the 16-50/2.8, then the
50-135/2.8, then the 77Ltd (or the 70LTD), then DA 100 macro, then
21Ltd, then FA*200 macro.
1. Faster is better, particularly if your eyes are weak and you need
the brighter view for focusing.
2. Modern zooms are great quality, but when you need a macro, only a
macro will do. And lenses like the 21 or 77 are so small that there
is little weight penalty or added bulk when traveling, and much less
obtrusive for street shooting or other forms of people photography.
