My kit for the last 3 week trip made a very large number of keepers
for me (today's updates in parens):

-- cam + lens --
*ist DS (K10D)
DA21/3.2 Limited
FA35/2 AL (FA43/1.9 Limited)
FA77/1.8 Limited (DA70/2.4 Limited)

-- acc --
4 sets AA Lithium disposables (three NP400 + travel charger)
8 Gbytes storage cards (12 Gbytes storage cards)
tripod and adapter
remote release
Polarizer and deep ND filter
bubble level

It's similar to your #1 kit. The three lens kit of DA70, FA43 and
DA21 are very light and compact, and exceptionally high quality. I
would also add the DA14 if I felt like carrying the additional pound:
it's the only lens I missed.

On that long a trip, I want at least a storage tank (Epson P2000 for
me) or a compact laptop (Apple PowerBook G4) although carrying the
laptop and its charger, backup pocket hard drive is at least as much
weight and more space than the rest of the kit combined (except for
the tripod).

All of the camera equipment in my kit plus the laptop fits neatly
into a Think Tank Urban Disguise 50 bag, the tripod straps on top in
its bag, and that whole kit will fit in a typical overhead
compartment for carryon. There's a ton of additional space in the
UD50 bag for travel incidentals as well.
