But it's got to be said they seem to be undervaluing their products. I
was quite surprised when the price of the K10D was announced (I was
willing to spend more), & I'm surprised at how relatively cheap the
DA* lenses compared to ther N&C equivalents.

Obviously their making a profit, but I'm sure it's not as big as it 
could be.

Dave, I suspect that Pentax's strategy was to buy market share, a common 
strategy of Japanese companies. The problem is that, in lenses, they 
created demand that they cannot meet. It is crazy for Pentax to offer 
U.S. customers rebates on lenses that Pentax cannot produce in a timely 
fashion. A price increase on lenses would make sense, at least until 
demand adjusts to supply capacity.
