Shel,
It's easy and should be obvious, but probably only if you have an
original condenser version head. When facing the enlarger, there is an
adjustment knob on the right side of the lamphouse that moves the light
source closer or farther from the negative carrier, and the bellows
below the light source extends or contracts. In it's farthest position,
it's marked for 35mm, and in it's closest position it's marked for 2-1/2
film. I retrofitted an Aristo cold light source to the original
condenser head and removed the condenser lenses, so the bellows and
adjustment stayed on my enlarger head whereas a dichro head would have
never had it to begin with. Aristo told me that it does not matter with
the cold light source where that adjustment is. But I found that there
is less light falloff with the light source close to the negative. But
still, I'm sure it's the lens that is at fault, as it was always an even
bigger problem with the condenser lenses installed.
Also, FWIW, I got the enlarger from my wife's brother-in-law, and
when I go it, it came with a Schneider 50mm Componon F4 lens, which is
far inferior to the Nikkor in sharpness and contrast. When I first got
it, I had all kinds of problems getting good results with that lens with
regard to obtaining sharpness and a flat field, so I bought the Nikkor.
Recently, I installed it on the lensboard again and found it has not
improved at all in the years since it has been resting. :)

Thanks,
Ed
