The V700 does darn well for a flatbed scanner. This page might be

The V700 resolution seems to be about 2600-2800 ppi, but both the  
Minolta Scan Dual II and Nikon Coolscan IV ED pull out more detail  
and grain (and defects...) at their nominal 2820 and 2900 ppi  
resolution spec.

Sometimes the V700's slight defocus is a plus in masking dust and  
minor scratches, however. :-)
