And a fascinating point it is. One thing that occurred to me shooting with the R-D1 is that the shutter sound is just a good old-fashioned click. No 'whir' at all. I found this *very* useful in the mosque, for instance. With a lot of cameras, especially point-n-shoots but also some DSLRs, you get a click and then a very electronic 'whir'. This instantly alerts possible subjects to the photographer's presence. When I was shooting in the mosque, I was doing a bit of banging and crashing anyway moving the big TV tripod around, so subjects new there was some ambient noises. An extra 'click' in amongst this was simply hidden. If I had taken, for instance, the Panasonic L1, there would have been an extra noise in there after the click which kind of gives the game away with this sort of shooting. Of course, if one engages the subjects then this is all academic. But for candid photography, I like a simple click.
